The Framework You Pick Is the Constraint You Inherit
Most teams evaluate testing frameworks the way they evaluate any other software tool: feature lists, documentation quality, community size, and ease of setup. The assumption underneath all of that is that once you pick a framework, you're done making the important decision. What follows is just implementation.
That assumption is wrong, and it tends to become obviously wrong at exactly the worst time - when the team has scaled its test suite, the CI pipeline is already slow, and flakiness has started making everyone quietly ignore the results.
You are not choosing a testing framework. You are choosing the limitations your team will operate within.
Appium's appeal is real. Write once, run on both platforms. Use languages you already know. Bring web automation experience directly into mobile. For teams in early stages, or teams where platform specialization isn't available, this matters. The cross-platform abstraction lowers the cost of getting started.
But abstraction is not free. Appium communicates with the application through an additional driver layer that introduces latency and synchronization complexity the framework cannot fully hide. As the suite grows, these characteristics compound. Tests become slower. Intermittent failures start appearing for reasons that are difficult to reproduce or diagnose. Engineers begin re-running tests to get a clean pass. Flakiness becomes the ambient condition of the entire testing program rather than an edge case to be fixed.
This is not a sign that your tests are poorly written. It is a sign that the architectural distance between the test and the application has a cost that manifests at scale.
Espresso and XCUITest remove that distance. They also remove the portability that Appium traded for it.
Espresso runs inside the Android application process itself. It synchronizes automatically with UI operations because it has direct access to the application's threading and lifecycle. The result is test execution that is both faster and dramatically more deterministic. Flakiness drops because the framework is not guessing at timing - it knows. XCUITest operates the same way within the iOS ecosystem, with the added benefit of Apple's enforced stability, which means platform updates almost never break the testing layer.
The cost is narrow scope. Espresso cannot test iOS. XCUITest cannot test Android. Both require developers to be involved in structuring tests effectively, which is a bigger organizational ask than most teams anticipate when they're comparing documentation pages.
The reality most teams arrive at, after a period of accumulated pain rather than upfront deliberate planning, is a hybrid. Espresso and XCUITest for the critical, high-frequency paths where reliability is non-negotiable. Appium for the cross-platform coverage where portability justifies the tradeoff. The mistake is not adopting Appium - it is adopting it everywhere, including places where its architectural weaknesses will actively undermine the confidence a test suite is supposed to create.
The framework comparison is not really about features. It is about understanding which constraints you are accepting, and whether those constraints fit the system you are actually building.

Your Users React to Format Before They Read a Word
Growth teams spend weeks on copy. They debate offer structures, test headlines, run cohort analysis on timing. And then, at the bottom of the campaign configuration screen, they pick a format from a dropdown and move on. That dropdown is doing more damage to conversion than almost anything else they are optimizing.
Here is what actually happens when format is wrong. A user opens a fintech app to check their portfolio balance. A full-screen modal appears immediately, promoting a mutual fund recommendation. The user does not weigh the offer. They react to the interruption. Before they have read a single word of carefully tested copy, the format has already told them that your priority is more important than theirs. They dismiss it. In many cases, they associate the friction with the app itself rather than just the campaign.
Format communicates something entirely separate from content. It tells the user whether you are helping them finish something or demanding that they stop.
The distinction between a bottom sheet and a modal is not aesthetic. A bottom sheet slides up from the edge of the screen while the user's current context remains partially visible behind it. It signals continuation - here is something relevant to what you are already doing. A modal replaces or occludes everything. It signals a full stop - this requires your complete attention right now. Users process these signals instantly and unconsciously. The threshold for what they will tolerate from each format is completely different.
Most mobile engagement teams are running modal-heavy strategies. Not because they have determined through testing that modals produce better outcomes in their specific context. But because the modal was the only template in their CEP's default library, and reconfiguring it would have required engineering involvement and a release cycle that nobody wanted to spend on a format change. The format decision was not made strategically. It was made by whatever happened to be available.
The most common mistake is using modals for promotional content that has no urgency. The second is never experimenting with format at all.
Modals have a legitimate place. Irreversible or high-stakes confirmations. First-session onboarding gates that users genuinely cannot skip. Time-gated offers where the value expires within the current session. Security escalations. In each of these cases, the full interruption is appropriate because the user, if asked, would agree that stopping them made sense. The bar for that is much higher than most teams apply.
Bottom sheets are for everything else that needs to be layered over the current context without competing against it: post-task prompts, feature nudges during browsing, multi-step opt-in flows, notification permission requests. Inline components are for ambient awareness - the feature discovery card that sits in the feed until the user is ready, not until your campaign demands their attention.
The format experiment most teams should run first is simple: find the highest-volume promotional modal in your engagement stack, check whether it fires mid-task or at a natural pause, check the dismissal rate, and run an A/B test with a bottom sheet variant using identical copy and targeting. The format change alone - no other variable - will tell you more about the source of your friction than any amount of copy testing has.
The offer is usually not the problem. The format is the problem. And until teams can change format without opening a sprint, they will never know.
