The Truth Behind the Famous 8× In-App Stat
According to Airship's in-app messaging explainer (2026), one national media company used in-session experiences to collect user preferences and saw a conversion rate 8 times higher than standard push notifications. Two details fall out every time the figure gets repeated. The comparison channel was push and the sample was one company running one preference-collection campaign.
A multiple that describes in-app's edge over push does not describe its edge over email, because push and email do not perform the same at baseline.
Rebuild it honestly and you get a range
MailerLite's dataset across 3.6 million campaigns and 181,000-plus accounts puts all-industry email CTR around 1.7 to 2.1%, with automated behavioural flows averaging 5.58%. In-app nudge CTR sits in the 15 to 40% band.
Run the ends against each other, Low-end in-app against high-end email is about 3x. High-end in-app against blended email campaign performance clears 20x. The real answer is 3 to 20-plus times, and 8x happens to sit inside it, which is probably why the borrowed number spread so easily.
There is also a correction that pushes the gap wider. M3AAWG research found 20 to 80% of B2B email clicks are non-human, generated by security tools like Microsoft Defender and Proofpoint pre-clicking every link before a person sees the message. Part of email's published benchmark was never a human decision.
The mechanism, in miniature
An in-app campaign reaches someone already inside the product, mid-session, with a reason to be there. Email has to pull a person out of an unrelated context first, then survive open, read, decide, click, page load, and often a re-login. Each of those steps is a drop-off point that in-app skips entirely.
That is two of the three mechanisms behind the gap. All three compound, which is why the difference is large rather than marginal.
Where it turns negative
An ignored email costs you close to nothing, An irrelevant in-app campaign appears inside a session the user was actively committed to, consumes attention and screen space, and returns nothing useful. Static banners see 8 to 12% engagement in week one, falling to 2 to 3% by week three as users go immune.
A team that reallocates budget on the strength of 8x, without matching investment in targeting and suppression logic, can land below the email-only baseline it replaced. That downside never appears in the version of the stat people quote.
